BinScan is an AI-powered waste sorting assistant built to make recycling effortless. By simply pointing a camera at any waste item, the app instantly identifies whether it belongs in the Recyclable, Organic, or General Waste bin — in under one second.

BinScan is an AI-powered waste sorting assistant. The user points their camera at any waste item. Our AI, trained using Google Teachable Machine, instantly classifies it into one of three categories — Recyclable, Organic, or General Waste — in under one second. The app then shows which bin to use on screen, and at the same time sends a signal to an Arduino board which lights up the correct LED — green for Recyclable, red for Organic, and blue for General Waste.


🟢 Recyclable Waste 

What goes here: Plastic bottles, aluminium cans, cardboard boxes, newspapers, glass bottles, and paper packaging.

How to sort: Rinse items before placing them in the green bin. Remove lids from bottles and flatten cardboard boxes.

🔴 Organic Waste 

What goes here: Food scraps, fruit and vegetable peels, banana skins, leftover cooked food, tea bags, coffee grounds, and fallen leaves.

How to sort: Place directly in the red bin. Do not mix with plastic or packaging. Great for composting!

🔵 General Waste 

What goes here: Styrofoam cups, used tissues, dirty plastic bags, broken ceramics, chip packets, and any mixed or contaminated packaging.

How to sort: Place in the blue bin. These items cannot be recycled or composted and will go to landfill.
